Poker Etiquette

There are specific rules of etiquette that govern the game of Poker. Serious Poker players observe these etiquette rules and those that don’t are consider disruptive and may even be barred from participating. As with most rules, Poker etiquette is based upon the guiding principle of courtesy. Below is a list of Poker etiquette that every player should know before sitting down to play at the table.

1. Do not use profanity, obscenities, threats or other abusive language in a Poker game.

2. Never move another player’s cards before the winner has taken the winnings from the center pot.

3. Do not try to peek at another player’s cards. This is a serious violation of etiquette and is considered cheating. If a player notices one of the players peeking at another player’s hand, then it is the duty of the first player to report the player that is peeking.

4. Players are not permitted to touch another person’s money without the permission of the player.

5. Players must exhibit considerate and fair table manners as well. They should be mindful of table space and be careful not to occupy too much room on the table. Common sense should dictate how to behave at the table so as not to make other players feel uncomfortable or awkward.

6. Arguing, shouting, or the use of physical threats is strictly forbidden. Treat dealers and other players with respect. Refrain, at all times, from belligerent behavior

7. Excessive chatting to the point that it disrupts the flow of the game or the concentration of other players is also unacceptable.

8. Players are expected to notify the dealer and other players if they notice an error in the game proceedings.

9. If a player decides to fold, it is permitted at any time. Other players should not question, object or criticize a player for folding.

10. Cutting the deck is a tradition in Poker and is usually done by the player to the right of the dealer. The player has the choice of either cutting the deck or passing the cut to the next player. A tap on the deck indicates that there is no need to cut the deck.

11. Chips should be stacked in a manner that does not prevent other players from seeing how many chips are stacked, or in a manner that obstructs the dealer’s ability to deal out the cards.

12. Players should be well versed in the rules of Poker when they sit down at the game table to play.

13. Comments about another player’s hand or the player’s own hand that might impact the outcome of the game, are not allowed at any time during the game.

Remember, as with all games, the game of Poker is an activity that should be enjoyed by all the participants. Following Poker etiquette helps create the right type of atmosphere for the game and helps ensure the enjoyment of all those participating.
